A person who spiked sweets with sleeping medication and gave them to youngsters at a youth camp in Leicestershire has pleaded guilty to sexual offences against two young males both nine and ten years old.

The accused was taken into custody after eight children and an older person fell ill at the location in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, pleaded guilty to a total of 17 charges when he stood at Leicester Crown Court on recently.

Yet, he refused to admit one particular crime he was facing, which was involving a young boy.

Ruben was held in detention prior to a additional proceeding on November 28th.

'Candy game'

The legal representative, handling the case, detailed Ruben's offending to the court.

She said his those affected were under-privileged children who were attending a summer camp which he ran.

The defendant played a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would access the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the man had played this game with the boys "for many years", and youngsters had previously fallen ill the following morning.

She explained Ruben had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had concerns in recently.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "In the summer" his stepson had suspicions about the activities, with valid cause.

"They decided to have a look in the individual's items."

The legal counsel said materials including infant oil, ointment and syringes were located, and his stepchild alerted the authorities about his worries.

She explained Ruben proceeded to engage in the "candy game" with six boys that evening - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the following morning.

"Authorities" had not responded by that time," she stated further.

The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously told that it was reviewing Leicestershire Police's handling of the situation.

The prosecutor stated the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the stepson called the authorities a second time.

She said the man then played the "candy game" in a room of five minors.
