Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in multiple disciplines.

The company behind the mission is a private space firm established by a Amazon founder.
